      What kids learn

      • Rosh Hashanah: the Jewish New Year, the world's birthday, apples and honey, and Shanah tovah
      • The shofar's wake-up call and tashlich: a fresh start by the water

The whole family gathers at a cozy cabin by Niagara Falls for a double birthday: Rosh Hashanah, the birthday of the world, and Baby Botcohen's first birthday. Before sundown they hunt for seven special foods from the Land of Israel, bake a round challah with raisins, open Daddy's toy-brick gift, welcome the Steinbots from Botsberg, and get a sweet hello from Grandpa in space. At sunset the candles glow over the falls. The Botcohens tell the gentle creation story, everyone dips apples in honey and says Shanah tovah, the kids practice saying sorry for a fresh start, and Nana brings a honey cake. The next morning they walk to a little shul to hear the shofar, and in the afternoon they do tashlich at a safe railing by the water. Shanah tovah!

Try it at home: Dip apple slices in honey and say Shanah tovah. Talk about one fresh start you want this year, and listen for a shofar (or a friendly toot!) together.

Chabot Holidays. Episode 3. Rosh Hashanah: A Double Birthday! We're here! A cozy cabin, right by Niagara Falls! We came early, so we can get everything ready long before the holiday starts at sundown. Rosh Hashanah starts tonight, and it's Baby Botcohen's first birthday too! Two birthdays on one day? That's right! Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year, and the birthday of the whole world. Let's learn it together! So tonight, we'll have a double birthday party! Yay! First, we need seven special foods from the Land of Israel. The Torah talks about them! Wheat! Barley! Grapes! Figs! Pomegranates! Olives! Dates! Wheat makes our challah, grapes make our grape juice, and olives make olive oil. Seven! On Rosh Hashanah, our challah is round, like a circle, because the year goes round and round. And we can add raisins, for a sweet new year! Before the holiday starts, a first birthday present, built by Daddy! Yay! Toy bricks! Everything grows with a little love! Look! A flying car! We made it from Botsberg! Happy birthday, Baby Botcohen! A little care makes everything better, and so does family! Wheee! Before the holiday begins, look who is calling! Happy first birthday, little one! And a sweet new year from outer space! Grandpa! It's the world's birthday too! Then it's a very big party! Have a sweet new year, everyone! Now screens off. The holiday is almost here. Everyone has a job. Botsville is built with love! Apples and honey go right in the middle! And I will fold the napkins. The holiday candles are lit, and the sun is setting over the falls. Rosh Hashanah is beginning! Long ago, Hashem made the whole world. The light, the sky, the seas, the plants, the stars, and the animals. And on the sixth day, Hashem made the very first people, Adam and Eve. That's why Rosh Hashanah is the world's birthday! And one year ago, Hashem gave us a very special gift. Our baby! Yay! We make Kiddush on grape juice, and dip our round challah in honey. Then we dip apples in honey, and wish each other a good and sweet new year. Shanah tovah! We eat pomegranates too. We hope our good deeds will be as many as its seeds! A new year is a fresh start. It's a good time to say sorry, and try to do better. I'm sorry I took your blocks. That's okay. Fresh start! And now, a honey cake for our birthday girl! Happy first birthday, Baby Botcohen! Yay! The next morning, the family walked to a little shul nearby. On Rosh Hashanah, we hear the shofar. Its call is like a wake-up call to do good things! (the shofar sounds) Toot! In the afternoon, everyone took a short walk to the water, near the falls. This is tashlich. We say a special prayer by the water, and ask Hashem to help us let go of our mistakes. Just like the water flows away, we start the new year fresh. Every question is a good question. Can we come back next year? Every year! Two birthdays, a sweet new year, and Niagara Falls. The best gift of all is being together. Shanah tovah! And happy first birthday, Baby Botcohen!
